Established on 1st July 1989, this PG Department has a long tradition of Sociology teaching. Shamaldas Arts College, one of the oldest colleges in the Saurashtra Region, started BA Hons Course in Sociology in the year 1947-48. It was the beginning of Sociology-teaching in Gujarat. Fondly known among his students and near and dear friends as IP, Dr. Desai left Bhavnagar to join Pune university. His student Dr. K. Ramman Unni took charge of Department and due to his excellent teaching style and scholarship , Sociology became a well – established subject at graduate level. When Dr. Ramman Unni went to Delhi to join the School of Planning, his student Prof. Hariprasad Ajawaliya became HoD of the Department, and he gave new height to teaching of Sociology.
