The Department of Marine Sciences was established in 1998 and is the only Department in Gujarat State which offers Marine Ecology at post graduate level. The department has progressed steadily and crossed several mile stones.

Marine ecology plays a significant role in the management of marine environment which will help in sustaining the natural resources, protection and conservation of critical habitats including areas of high biodiversity and long term economic growth of a country.

The coastal zone in India is under increasing pressure due to high growth rate of human population, development of various industries such as tourism, chemical, petrochemical, fishing, aquaculture, shipping, mining etc, on the central zone and discharge of municipal sewage, industrial waste effluents and offshore petroleum exploration activities. These activities have imparted on the ecology of the coastal waters. The land and sea based activities which are inter related, inter dependent and inter reactive, if planned in isolation and not implemented in consonance with the other activities will have adverse impact like sever degradation of the seawater quality, loss of critical habitats like mangroves, coral reefs, marine flora and fauna and have several other detrimental effects which would affect the long term economy of the country.
