The Department was established in 1973 as a part of Saurastra University. In 1979 it came under Bhavnagar University. The Department was housed in the premises of Sir P.P. Institute of Science until 1985 when it shifted to the present building of its own.
At the time of establishment the department had only two members on its staff. In 1977 it became a full – fledged department with one professor, two readers and three Lecturers.
The department imparts instructions in Mathematics at M.Sc. and Ph.D. levels. So far 11 students have obtained their Ph.D. degrees from this Department. Out of these, one student namely, Dr. P.J. Joshi, is now an international renowned scientist working at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Bombay.
Two students of this Department were the first in Gujarat to clear the JRF Test of the UGC.

The Department has about fifty research papers published in national as well as international journals to its credit.
The Department has organized six conference/ winter schools/research seminars two at national level, to its credit.
In addition to the grants from the University, the Department has been getting Library Grant (Which is Rs. 1.8 lacs at present) from NBHM since 1994.
This Department runs the PGDCA (Post Graduate Diploma In Computer Application) self financed course since 1998. This PGDCA Course is very useful to the graduate students from any discipline. They can easily be placed in the Secondary, Higher Secondary Schools, colleges and in Organizations.Several students have started their own businesses for Designing, Accounting and software development.
