DEPARTMENT OF GUJARATI :

 
 
            Department of Gujarati was a post graduate center of the Saurashtra University since 1967 and was a post graduate center of Bhavnagar University since 1978. In 1988 it became a full-fledged Department of Bhavnagar University, Bhavnagar.
           
Programmes run by the Department :
1. M.A.

Two Academic years. 400 marks examination each year.
Result determined on the basis of completing the whole course.
     
2. M. Phil. One year. 400 Marks. Out of those 300 for theory papers and 100 for Dissertation. (Programme is starting from June 2007)
     
3. Ph.D.

Vinod Joshi and Mahendrasinh Parmar are recognised guides for Ph.D. Programme

Admission in M.A. and M.Phil. Course :
            Passing standard: Minimum second class in Bachelor's degree for M.A. programme and 50 % in Master's degree in Gujarati subject for M.Phil. programme Admission is given on the basis of Merit and the percentage of reservation quota allotted by government. Other University students can avail 2% seats out of the total seats available. Admission form is available from the registrar before the date announced in the advertisement published by the University for M.A. and M.Phil. Programme
Admission in Ph.D. Course :
            Second class master degree holder can approach the Recognised guides of this Department either personally or by mail.

Library Facility :

            University central library is available for the students admitted in this Department. Students can avail the reader's cards from the library and have the books for their home use. Periodicals are also available in the central library.
 
Internet facility :
            The computers of this department are connected with the internet server of the  University and can be accessed by the students for academic purpose.
 
Educational Equipments :
            This Department has 3-PC, 1-Laptop, Digital slide projector, Digital camera, Video camera, Pexiscope, Public address system, mp3 cd player and many other educational equipments
 
Academic activities being done in the Department :
1. 'Vicharsabha'
              A weekly programme where students have the stage to express their thoughts on various subjects of literature as well as art for about 15 minutes. Each Vicharsabha makes the opportunity possible for six students. During whole the year around 110 lectures are being given. Students themselves conduct the whole event. The teachers observe and comment on the lectures given by the students. It is most innovative and confidence generating programme.
   
2. 'Granthmadhu'  :
 

            A bi-weekly programme in which a student gives an account in a one hour lecture of a well-known book written in other than Gujarati language, which has taken place as a remarkable one in the field of literature. The teachers observe and comment on the lectures given by the student.

   
3. 'Navonmesh'  :
 

            A bi-weekly  programme in which a student gives an account in a one hour lecture of a well-known book written in Gujarati language, which has taken place as a remarkable one in the field of Gujarati literature. The teachers observe and comment on the lectures given by the student.

   
4. 'Samsamayik'  :
 

            A monthly programme in which the students learn to evaluate and appreciate the content of contemporary literary journals of Gujarati. It is an ambitious programme to connect the students to day to day literary scenario.

Abhyas Shibir  :
              It is the most clicked out activity spread over all the Gujarat from this Department. Since 1996 this Department continuously each year organises the convention of students selected from each arts College of Bhavnagar University. Well known writers and scholars of Gujarati stay for three days with the students and deliver lectures in respective field of literature. Students are also presenting their literary skills and participate in discussion. They play literary quiz and sometimes Drama and one-act play also. Many standard periodicals and journals have mentioned this activity as a flow of emerging incentives to students, in their editorial writings as well as in individual articles. This programme could successfully evolve the vibrations and passion for Gujarati subject in particular and in literature in general.
   
6. 'Pratibimb' :
 

            This department publishes an annual magazine composed and edited by the students of this Department named 'Pratibimb' since last two years. It covers the yearly account of the activities done by the students and the articles written by the students. It is only magazine in Gujarat which is published by the students for a particular subject. Students get motivated through their published work in this magazine.
   
7.

'Vaachikam'
 

            This is the programme in which students present the literature in dramatic form. This department has extended this activity in higher secondary schools of Bhavnagar and nearby villages also. It is a training to learn the literature through oral performance. Selected poems, short stories, essays etc. from the text book of Gujarati from standard 10th and 12th (i.e. Secondary and Higher Secondary) are being presented in dramatic form by the students to cultivate the attitude towards literature of the upcoming generation, studying in high schools. This experiment is appreciated by various schools and they have kept inviting this department under this programme.
   
8. Lecture Series :
 

This Department runs Four lecture series during the year :

9.  Medals/ Scholarships :
 

The student who stands first amongst all the students of Gujarati appeared in the examination is being awarded with :

Recognition in academic front :
            This is the department which is highly appreciated for its academic programmes shaped and emerged for the extension of the knowledge of Gujarati literature. Many of the renowned journals have emphasised the activities being done by this department in their editorial writings.
 

Present status in terms of infrastructure facilities :

            Right now this Department is accommodated in the space availed in the building made for the social sciences. A new building of the Department of Gujarati is under construction in University campus with the required facilities and shall be in use from June 2007.
