    On the approval of UGC, New Delhi (vide latter No.: - F.2.5/89    dated 25th June 1993), the P.G.Department of Computer Science was established in June 1994. This is one of the prestigious P.G. Departments of Bhavnagar University. Due to long experienced, hardworking and devoted staff as well as sincere & hardworking students, this department achieved excellent support from administration, academicians and students leader of the community. This has helped in faster development and successful activities of this department. The department contributes significant financial support for the university development programs.
 
Every year about 180-200 students learn in this department,

(1) Master in Computer Application (MCA)

  The department conducts a  three years –six semester master degree program known as Master in Computer Applications (MCA). Its intake is 60 students of which 30 seats under grant-aid and 30 seats under self finance. As per Gujarat State Common Entrance Test (GCET) committee norms, candidate graduated from a university recognized and located in Gujarat state is eligible to appear for GCET. Admission and reservation are as per rules of GCET.

PROJECT-II

(2) Research – Ph.D.

From 2001, the department started registering for Ph.D. degree. For qualifying requirement to be a PG teacher or to be Associate Professor, the faculties in colleges / PG Departments of the universities in the state are more interested for Ph.D. registration. The department also gives priority to such cases. Also, due to, large opportunities and professional scope in I.T. Industries, fresh students are not much interested to join for Ph.D. registration, under these circumcises, there are 10 faculties have registered

for Ph.D. and five faculties are awarded Ph.D. Degree .The research work in done in the area of Computer Applications using Technologies / Tools of Information Technologies viz, Artificial intelligence, Graphics, Multimedia, Network & Communications.

Several research papers have been accepted for presentation in international & National conferences / seminars
 

(3) Student Career Development:

Due to constant liaison with I.T. industries, educational institutes, and computer users organizations, students of this department obtain significant opportunities to be in touch with current trends of I.T. industry. And therefore, on successful completion of MCA programme, several students obtained assignments in prestigious and leading software developing firms. In India & abroad many students established their own reputed software consultancies and training institutions and thereby, are self-employed.

The department has procured career lab software for students’ soft skill development. It helps to develop their communication & presentation skill along with computer professional skill. The department also organizes fast track training programme (48 hours training in a period of 6 days) to develop profesnalisam among the students. This has helped the student to obtain project and job assignments in reputed companies. The degree of success thus has been increased significantly.
(4) Other Activities:

This department provides services to the community in several ways. It assists for establishment of Computer Colleges in Bhavnagar University area. It also provides services to other institutes for recruitment. Department provides consultancy for the following.

  • State Bank of Saurashtra, HQ. Bhavnagar for technical support.
  • PNR Society Bhavnagar Technology Park for disables.

At present Dr. V.R. Rathod renders his service as the Dean of Science faculty and member of executive council. He was invited by president, Georgia south western state university (GSW), USA to prepare a M.O.U. document and sign it between Bhavnagar University Bhavnagar & GSW, USA for academic & research programms
(6) Infractural Facilities

Computing Facilities:-

Computer Network with Windows NT & Linux servers 75 nodes with latest development and other software. There are additional computers for research, Library and administration. 128 kbps ISDN and VSAT, 512 kbps broadband internet connection, two OHP projectors, 3 multimedia projectors. Faculties are regularly using these teaching aids.
 

Library:-

A library with reading cum reference room is available in the department. The collections of over 2500 books with different titles among various disciplines of computer science are available for MCA and Research student.
The library has subscribed latest computer science magazines and research journals. The Central University Library is having about one-lakh books, and has numerous books on computer science.
 

7) Hostel Facility:-
MCA students are given accommodation in PG hostels of the University
There are Boys and Girls PG Hostels in the University campus.

(8)USP of the Institution:

This department has been selected as a “global partner of 21 “century programme approved by the Board of University system of Georgia State, USA. Under this program the department has M.O.U. with the Georgia South Western State University, Columbus State University and Darton college of Georgia State of USA for (i) Research and training work for rehabilitation of disabled people using IT tools, (ii) Exchange of I. T. know-how from community services and (iii) Faculty and students interaction programmes for academic and cultural interest.
