  • The Department of Chemistry was established in 1968 with seven students as a part of Saurastra University.
  • Before this the course was run as a centre at Local Science College. Prof. K. A. Thaker took over as Professor& Head of this Department in 1970 and the Department turned into a full fledged Department with intake of 60 students offering courses in organic, inorganic and physical branches.
  • Since then the department has been headed by Prof. L. D. Dave, Prof. S. N. Misra and Prof. P. B. Trivedi in chronological order.
  • The Department has produced more then 1600 M. Sc.s in four branches of Chemistry.
  • To the credit of the Department are about 160 Ph. D.s and hundreds of publications.
  • The Department is recognized as an Environmental Consultant and Environmental Auditor (Category-A) by the Gujarat Pollution Control Board looking to facilities and expertise available.
  • The Department of Science and Technology, New Delhi has provided fund for Entrepreneurship Development Cell to the Bhavnagar University, which is currently established within the premises of this department. Prof NC Desai of the Department is appointed as Chief Project Leader of the Cell.
  • Since 1997, department has started awareness program on Intellectual Property Rights and its management. Department successfully organized three such programs for the academicians, scientists, and professional working as technocrats.

  7. Ion Selective Meter with four Ion selective electrodes from Orion, USA
  8. High Volume Samplers with dust collector from Enviontech. NewDelhi
  9. Air Stack Monitoring Device from Netal Chromatograoh
  10. Online Water Quality Analyzer Kit to measure the DO, EC, TDS, pH,  Colour etc.
  11. Dragger Pumps with Absorption tubes for HC, CO2, Phosphine, etc.
  12. Spectro-Flourometer RF-1501 from Shimadzu-Asia Pacific Ltd, Singapore

        Summary of the activities conducted during 2006-07

  • The Department started an orientation programme for M. Sc. Part-I & Part-II students.
  • Two eminent speakers were invited for the benefit of the students  
  • Prof. H. C. Trivedi, Honorable Vice-Chancellor delivered his talk on “Fascinating approach to Chemistry” and inspired the students
  • Dr. R. V. Jasra Scientist-G from C S & M C R I., delivered talk on “Bright future of Chemical Technology”
  •  To motivate the students of the department we have started inviting eminent persons of the society. Mr. Hamukhbhai Patel, I P S, the then S. P. of the district was invited in the department on 17th July-06. He delivered talk on “Importance of Discipline in the life”
  • Dr. Keshav Dev, Executive Director, Ranbaxy delivered lecture on “Process Development and innovation in Chemical Technology” on 24/09/06.
  • Prof. Peter Elibracht, University of Dortmunt, Germany delivered lecturer on “Carbon Monoxide: An important basic Chemical of the future” on 17th January-07
  • An overwhelming response encouraged us to organize Second workshop on Analytical Instrumentation at National level and we organized National Workshop on Analytical Instrumentation (AAICUCI-06) in December-06, which attracted about 150 participants from all over the country.
  • Department organized Annual day to keep cultural tradition alive among the students on 12th February-07
  • In order to strengthen the industry-academia linkage under the recognition as Environmental Consultant and Environmental Auditor (Category-A) for schedule-I & II industries within Gujarat Region, a team of Analytical Division carried out Audit and consultancy work for various industries.
